UAE Travel Agencies Warn: Don't Cancel Flights Just Yet

As tensions cause airspace closures across parts of the Middle East, travel agencies in the UAE are advising passengers not to cancel or change flights prematurely — even if their destination is affected.

Why? Because airlines are required to reschedule or rebook cancelled flights at no extra cost, as long as the customer waits for the airline's official action. Acting too early could mean you’re stuck with fees.

“Airlines and thousands of travellers have been compelled to adapt to a new reality, as numerous flights to regional destinations, including Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran, have been postponed or cancelled,” said Badr Ahli, director of DW Travel. “While carriers continue to monitor the evolving travel landscape, the most important question arises here is: what is the best course of action for those holding disrupted tickets?”

The answer from industry pros is clear: wait it out. If your flight is canceled for operational reasons, the airline is obligated to offer alternative routes or full rebookings free of charge.

However, if you take matters into your own hands by rescheduling or canceling before the airline does, you could be slapped with fees.

This advisory comes as air traffic remains unstable across several regional hubs, with reroutes and delays affecting travel plans to and from major destinations like Amman, Beirut, Damascus, Baghdad, and Tehran.

So what should you do if your flight is potentially affected? Travel experts recommend:

  • Staying in close contact with your airline or travel agent

  • Avoiding self-initiated changes

  • Monitoring official updates from carriers and airport authorities

In short: patience now could save you money later.
