Israel has agreed to let humanitarian aid from the UAE enter Gaza, following a phone conversation between the UAE’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar.

This move comes as Israel faces mounting international pressure over its renewed military operations in Gaza. The aid, part of an initial phase, will focus on feeding around 15,000 civilians. It also includes essential supplies to keep bakeries running and support infant care.

While the development is a positive step, humanitarian groups say it’s nowhere near enough.

“Aid reaching Gaza is merely a drop in the ocean of what is urgently needed,” said Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.

Earlier on the same day, the UN confirmed that Israel had approved about 100 trucks to carry humanitarian aid into Gaza. However, concerns remain high. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that around two million people in Gaza are at risk of starvation.

The Gaza Strip has been under continuous Israeli air and ground assault since the October 2023 cross-border attacks by Hamas.

During the call, the UAE and Israel also discussed the need to restore a humanitarian truce, push for a ceasefire, and work towards releasing hostages. As the crisis in Gaza deepens, this aid marks a small but important step amid growing calls for greater humanitarian access and an end to hostilities.
