Dubai Approves 100-Year Drainage Mega Project

Dubai is officially rolling out a drainage system designed to last for the next 100 years. The deep-tunnel project just got the green light after April 2024’s record-breaking rainfall showed the city needed stronger, smarter infrastructure.

A wake-up call from the rain

During the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum 2025, Dubai Municipality’s Acting Director General Eng. Marwan Bin Ghalita said the downpour was the push they needed. “The rain incident may be a blessing,” he explained, pointing out how it sparked teamwork and faster action.

What the project means for the city

The massive deep-tunnel drainage network will protect Dubai from future floods while supporting its rapid growth. It’s being done with private sector partners—because, as Bin Ghalita noted, projects this big need global expertise and investment.

Smarter systems, quicker responses

Beyond tunnels, Dubai Municipality is boosting tech to predict and handle weather challenges. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are being used to pinpoint vulnerable spots, while better data-sharing across agencies is being built to speed up emergency decisions.
