Turkiye just handed one of its most prestigious medals to a woman for the first time—and it’s none other than the UAE’s own Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak.

During an official visit to Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan awarded Sheikha Fatima the Order of the Republic, recognizing her groundbreaking work in the fields of women’s empowerment, family development, and childhood welfare. The ceremony took place in the presence of First Lady Emine Erdogan and a delegation accompanying Her Highness.

Often called the “Mother of the Nation,” Sheikha Fatima holds numerous leadership roles in the UAE, including Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood. This latest honor marks her as the first female recipient of Turkiye’s Order of the Republic—a medal awarded only by the president, and only on cabinet recommendation.

President Erdogan praised Sheikha Fatima for her “outstanding humanitarian contributions” and decades of service in education, health, women’s rights, and social development. “Her journey has left a clear mark on the UAE and inspired communities across the region,” he said during the ceremony.

He also emphasized the strong and evolving relationship between the UAE and Turkiye, noting that Sheikha Fatima has played a key role in strengthening these ties—especially through initiatives led by the organizations she chairs.

A standout example? The Sheikh Zayed Children’s Complex in Istanbul, launched in the 1990s. President Erdogan highlighted its success in supporting vulnerable children and deepening the cultural bonds between both nations.

This recognition isn’t just symbolic—it’s a statement. It reflects global recognition of Sheikha Fatima’s vision and efforts to build more resilient, compassionate societies. And it’s a powerful reminder that social impact, driven by empathy and purpose, knows no borders.
