Genomic Study Uncovers Koalas' Pre-Human Population Crash

A genomic study has completely reshaped the evolutionary story of Australia’s iconic marsupial. A catastrophic decline in koala numbers forced the species to the brink of extinction thousands of years before humans walked the Earth, the genomic analysis has revealed. Published by Oxford University Press in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, the research led by the University of Sydney and Texas A&M University demonstrates how all living koalas can be traced back to a single, struggling population during a difficult ancient climate period.
