Here's When the UAE Will Enforce a Complete Ban on the Use of Plastic

Beginning on January 1, 2024, the UAE will impose a total ban on single-use plastic bags.

A ministerial resolution, according to the news agency WAM, bans the import, manufacture, and distribution of single-use bags from 2024. Additionally, plastic cutlery, cups, lids, plates, food containers, and boxes will be banned throughout the UAE starting on January 1, 2026.

Products intended for export or re-export, as long as they are clearly branded, as well as rolls of thin bags that meet the requirements specified by the authorities, are exempt from the ban. To package items like earbuds, cigarettes, wet wipes, and balloons, among others, fewer single-use packaging materials should be produced, it is urged by the authorities.

Protecting the environment from plastic pollution is the goal of UAE-wide efforts. The ruling restricts the use of plastic and imposes federal restrictions on its use. So far, plastic use has been banned or restricted in at least four emirates. Single-use plastics were outlawed in Abu Dhabi on June 1 and shops began charging 25 fils per bag in Dubai on July 1. Beginning on October 1, 2022, Sharjah imposed a 25-fil tax on single-use plastic bags, with a ban expected to take effect on January 1, 2024. Single-use plastics will no longer be sold in Umm Al Quwain starting this year.
