Houthi Missile Compels Gulf of Aden Ship Crew Evacuation

The Greek-owned cargo vessel True Confidence faced a missile strike approximately 50 nautical miles southwest of Yemen's Aden port, a Houthi-claimed attack.

The ship, owned by Greek interests, was adrift with an ongoing fire following the assault. The status of the 20 crew members and three armed guards remained uncertain. Reports suggested three sailors were missing, with four sustaining severe burns.

Two U.S. officials, speaking anonymously, indicated fatalities resulting from the incident. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported the crew abandoning the vessel, no longer under their control.

Yemen's Houthis claimed responsibility, asserting the attack followed the ship's crew disregarding warnings from Yemeni naval forces. Although no immediate claim was made, Houthi forces have previously targeted international shipping, disrupting global maritime routes and prompting diversions.

Houthi assaults, featuring drones and missiles, intensified since mid-November, purportedly in solidarity with Palestinians. The incidents have compelled shipping companies to adopt longer and costlier routes bypassing Southern Africa.
