Ship Collision Off UAE Coast Blamed on Navigational Error

A collision between two commercial vessels off the UAE coast in the early hours of Tuesday, June 17, has been attributed to “navigational misjudgment,” according to an official statement by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI).

The incident involved the oil tanker ADALYNN, registered under Antigua and Barbuda, and the cargo vessel Front Eagle, flying the Liberian flag. The crash occurred 24 nautical miles off the UAE’s coast in the Gulf of Oman, near the critical Strait of Hormuz — one of the busiest oil shipping lanes in the world.

The mishap caused minor hull damage, a brief oil spill, and a fire in the fuel tank of one of the vessels. The blaze was quickly extinguished by emergency responders, and no injuries were reported among the 24 crew members, all of whom were evacuated and taken to Port of Khor Fakkan via the UAE National Guard’s search and rescue boats.

Officials confirmed the incident happened around 1:30am local time and clarified it was not security-related, despite growing tensions in the region due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. Maritime security firm Ambrey echoed this, stating no external threat was involved in the crash.

A full technical investigation is now underway in partnership with international maritime authorities, with UAE officials pledging transparency and adherence to global safety standards.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage between Oman and Iran connecting the Gulf to the Arabian Sea, sees about one-fifth of global oil traffic daily. According to Vortexa data, up to 20.8 million barrels of crude and refined fuels flow through this route each day.

This isn’t the first maritime emergency the UAE has handled in recent weeks. On June 4, a medical airlift was carried out from an oil tanker, and on May 18, 13 individuals were rescued from a sinking boat.

As the region navigates both geopolitical and maritime challenges, UAE authorities are emphasizing proactive safety protocols, urging vessels to maintain high navigational standards.
