India Extends Visas, Waives Overstay Fines for Stranded Foreigners

India has announced a crucial relief initiative aimed at assisting foreign nationals, including Gulf residents, stranded within its borders due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The Indian government has rolled out measures to extend visas and waive penalties for overstaying, providing much-needed support during this challenging time.

Details of the measures were shared by the Indian Consulate in Dubai, reflecting the government's consideration of the tense situation in the Gulf region.

Relief Measures for Stranded Foreigners

In a significant development, the government declared that all types of Indian visas and e-visas close to expiry would be extended by one month free of charge. Foreign nationals affected by the conflict can seek these extensions through jurisdictional Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs), which will handle requests on a case-by-case basis.

The government has also announced a waiver on overstay penalties for impacted individuals unable to leave India due to extenuating circumstances in West Asia. This waiver applies to overstays occurring after February 28, 2026.

Exit Permits and Temporary Landing Permits

Providing further assistance, exit permits for stranded foreigners will be issued free of charge. This measure ensures that individuals facing difficulties in extending their visas or leaving the country will not be penalized.

Significantly, non-compliance with the process of applying for an exit permit or visa extension will not be considered a breach of migration laws, easing concerns for those unable to adhere to standard procedures.

Additionally, India will offer Temporary Landing Permits (TLP) on a gratis basis to foreign nationals whose flights are diverted to Indian airports due to the ongoing conflict. This decision reflects India’s commitment to offering aid to those impacted by unexpected travel disruptions.

The measures serve to reassure foreign nationals stranded in India, offering them relief amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The initiative highlights India's proactive approach in responding to humanitarian needs during crises.
