ICJ rules lack of jurisdiction; UAE reaffirms call for peace in Sudan

The United Arab Emirates has welcomed a landmark decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which on Monday officially dismissed Sudan’s genocide case against the UAE, citing a “manifest lack of jurisdiction.”

The case, filed by Sudan in The Hague, accused the UAE of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the ongoing conflict that erupted in 2023. The UAE has firmly rejected the claims, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.

“The ICJ’s ruling clearly and unequivocally confirms that the case is without merit,” said Reem Ketait, Deputy Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs and the UAE’s representative before the court.

Ketait criticized the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for attempting to exploit international legal institutions, calling the lawsuit an effort to divert attention from the SAF’s own role in the devastating conflict.

The war in Sudan, now entering its third year, has led to thousands of civilian casualties and a deepening humanitarian crisis. In her remarks, Ketait urged both warring parties — the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF — to immediately cease hostilities without preconditions and engage in serious negotiations.

“The international community must act to facilitate a civilian-led political transition, ensure access to humanitarian aid, and hold perpetrators of human rights violations accountable,” she added.

The UAE reiterated that it is not a party to the conflict and does not support either side militarily or politically. Officials previously described Sudan’s allegations as “misleading at best, and fabricated at worst.”

With the case now officially struck from the court’s registry, the UAE reaffirmed its dedication to peaceful diplomacy and continued collaboration with regional and global partners to support stability in Sudan.

The ICJ’s decision is final and legally binding, though it does not carry enforcement power.
