Zara Pulls Ads After Being Accused of Resembling Gaza Genocide

Retail giant Zara pulled ads for its new and controversial “Collection 04_The Jacket” campaign from some parts of their website after the internet accused them of exploiting the current genocide taking place in Gaza right now. Social media users quickly pointed out that the images used to promote the collection had many unsettling elements such as rocks, rubble, and a cardboard cutout that resembles an upside-down map of Palestine.

The Spanish multinational brand, however, just released a statement across social media saying that the campaign was created months prior to the tragic events that have unfolded in Palestine since October 7. "The campaign, that was conceived in July and photographed in September, presents a series of images of unfinished sculptures in a sculptor's studio and was created with the sole purpose of showcasing craftmade garments in an artistic context," the post stated.

"Unfortunately, some customers felt offended by these images, which have now been removed, and saw in them something far from what was intended when they were created. Zara regrets that misunderstanding and we reaffirm our deep respect towards everyone," the post continued. 

While it certainly is good to have the fast fashion mogul address the backlash on social media, social media users couldn’t help but feel like the post was not enough. With some pointing out that Zara, indeed, did not even apologize about what their images have caused.
