Dh3,000 Fine for Blocking Emergency Vehicles in Sharjah

Blocking emergency vehicles isn't just annoying — it’s deadly. That’s the message from Sharjah Police this week as they roll out a strict reminder (and heavy penalties) for drivers who fail to move aside for ambulances, fire trucks, or rescue units.

Motorists who ignore sirens and flashing lights could now face a Dh3,000 fine, six black points, and 30 days of vehicle impoundment. And if you're thinking that’s just for main roads — nope, these penalties apply wherever the emergency vehicle is coming from: beside, behind, or across the lane.

Brigadier Ahmed Haji Al Serkal, director general at the General Department of Prevention and Community Protection, emphasized the life-or-death consequences of hesitation:

“Every second counts in emergencies. People’s lives depend on how fast our rescue teams can reach them.”

According to 2024 stats from the Ministry of Interior, 325 accidents were linked to drivers who didn’t yield to emergency vehicles. Dubai topped the list with 160 incidents, followed by Abu Dhabi (107), and Sharjah (17).

But it's not just about avoiding fines — it’s about being a decent human.

“Yielding to emergency vehicles is not just a rule; it’s a moral duty,” said Colonel Sami Al Naqbi of Sharjah Civil Defence.

He also offered a smart driving tip: if you're stopped at a red light and an emergency vehicle approaches from behind, carefully move into the pedestrian zone — without running the light — to clear the path.

For extra serious situations, like natural disasters or major emergencies, things get even stricter. Block a rescue unit during one of those, and you're looking at another Dh1,000 fine, four black points, and 60 days of impoundment.

The takeaway? It’s not just the law — it’s basic compassion. When sirens sound, move aside. You’re not just avoiding a fine, you could be saving a life.
