Dubai Completes Dhs10 Million of Deira Clock Tower Roundabout

The Dubai authorities have completed a Dhs10 million ($2.7 million) revamp of Deira's historic Clock Tower roundabout, Dubai Municipality said on Thursday.

The restoration scheme, which was aimed at "breathing new life into the iconic landmark" is now finished, the municipality said.

Three tiers of wildflowers have been planted at the roundabout to brighten its appearance, and a smart sensor has been installed in the upgraded fountain, to allow for water jets to respond to changes in wind speeds.

"We completed the development of the Clock Tower roundabout in Deira, one of the most prominent engineering and architectural landmarks in Dubai on schedule, giving it a new facade with modern designs that are aligned with the nation's cultural and historical character and the city’s status as a vibrant creative hub," said Dawoud Al Hajri, director general of Dubai Municipality.

In May, Dubai Municipality announced that the roundabout would be undergoing a renovation in order to enhance its visual appeal by incorporating hard flooring with greenery, colorful lighting, and an improved water fountain design.

The 1963-built clocktower, which is situated at the intersection of Umm Hurair Street and Al Maktoum Streetone – one of the most important intersections in the Emirate of Dubai, holds an important position in history as it was the first land crossing between Deira and Bur Dubai.

It was also the first land passage between Deira and Bur Dubai. It was also the first intersection for the major roads leading to Dubai before the Dubai-Abu Dhabi Road was built.
