The UAE woke up to a sea of red, green, white, and black as the nation celebrated Flag Day on November 3. From rooftops and balconies to shopfronts and schools, almost every corner of the country was wrapped in the colours of pride.

Exactly at 11am, government offices, private institutions, and homes across all seven emirates are set to raise the national flag while the UAE anthem played — a moment that’s become both simple and powerful, symbolizing unity, loyalty, and gratitude.

A Family Tradition that Never Gets Old

In Al Ain, Maitha Al Amari’s family treats Flag Day like a mini celebration. “My father gathers everyone — kids, grandkids — and we replace the flag together,” she said. “It’s something we’ve done for years, and it reminds us of who we are.”

For many Emirati families, the act of replacing old flags with new ones isn’t just symbolic — it’s a yearly ritual that brings generations together and keeps national pride alive.

Flags Everywhere, Love Everywhere

In Dubai, the community initiative Ferjan Dubai launched a campaign called “Our neighbourhoods look more beautiful with our flags,” where volunteers collect old flags and replace them with fresh ones. What started as a local project quickly turned into a countrywide wave of pride — with residents even dropping their locations on social media to get new flags delivered.

For 27-year-old teacher Sara M, Flag Day brings more than just patriotism. “It’s the start of cooler weather, holidays, and good memories,” she said. “Every year, I take photos of flags around my area and send them to friends abroad. It always reminds me of home.”

Why It Matters

Flag Day was first introduced in 2013 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, marking the accession of the UAE’s second president, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in 2004. More than just raising a flag, the day celebrates the UAE’s unity, leadership, and how far the nation has come in just over 50 years.
