Khamzat Chimaev Crowned UFC Middleweight Champ, Lifts UAE Flag in Record Win

Dubai’s own Khamzat Chimaev is officially the UFC Middleweight Champion. The 31-year-old fighter beat South Africa’s Dricus Du Plessis in Chicago at UFC 319 on August 16 with a dominant unanimous decision — all three judges scoring it 50-44.

Record-Breaking Performance

Chimaev didn’t just win, he smashed UFC records. He landed a mind-blowing 529 strikes, topping Max Holloway’s 447 from 2021. Du Plessis, who came in as the champ with a 23-2 record, was floored within 10 seconds and never recovered.

UAE’s Proud Moment

This win hit different for the UAE. Chimaev, who received his UAE passport earlier this year, waved the national flag inside the Octagon and became the first Dubai-based fighter to capture a UFC title. It’s a big step for the UAE’s growing role in global combat sports.

What’s Next?

For now, Chimaev isn’t stressing about who’s next in line. “I’m going to go back to the hotel, joke with my friends and enjoy this victory,” he told reporters. Meanwhile, fight fans can look forward to October’s UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi, where Tom Aspinall faces Ciryl Gane for the heavyweight title.
