Overcrowded Flats and Villas will Pay up to Dh1 Million in Fines

The "Your home, your responsibility" campaign was announced by Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) on Thursday in an effort to reduce residential overcrowding.

The authorities urged residents, property owners, and companies to abide by the rule by limiting the number of people permitted in each residential unit. Violators may be fined up to Dh1 million as part of the inspection campaigns, which will start in the first quarter of 2023. In compliance with Law No. 8 of 2019, a residential unit is considered to be overcrowded if it is occupied in a way that is excessive based on its size and utilities.

Residents can report cases of overcrowding and other violations of the occupancy law by contacting the municipal offices at 800555, the authorities advised. Inspectors from the Emirate's three municipalities will undertake inspection campaigns.

In accordance with a discount offered by the Department of Municipalities and Transport, offenders will only be required to pay 75% of the total administrative fine specified for the violation if it is paid within 60 days from the settlement option's date.

The initiative was started in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Authority, which aims to protect locals from the negative impacts of crowding in order to improve the emirate's standard of living. DMT has also stated that it will consider humanitarian situations when implementing the law.
