UAE Fines More Than 100 Retailers for Raising Prices for Basic Items

Inspectors monitoring supermarkets and grocery shops in the UAE have penalized more than a 100 retailers for raising prices of essential items.

The violations were made despite the implementation of price control by the government.

From April to Jul.5, the price control was violated by 125 retailers who increased prices for essential items like eggs and chicken.

Simultaneously, about 95 percent of retailers and grocers in the UAE have not increased the prices for eggs and poultry products.

The Consumer Protection Supreme Committee shared that about 209 spot checks have been carried out by inspectors and more checks are expected to be carried out.

The implementation of the price control order was approved in April by the UAE Cabinet on essential items like eggs, cooking oil, rice, dairy products, sugar, poultry, bread, wheat, and legumes.

If supermarkets want to increase the prices for these products, they have to secure a permission from the UAE's Ministry of Economy.

According to the ministry, any retailer who breaches the mandate will be fined from AED 10,000 to AED 200,000 for repeat offenders.

Consumers can file complaints about unauthorised price increases and report commercial malpractice at 800 12 22.
