The UAE Ministry of Defence (MoD) and local authorities have reassured residents that the country is safe and secure after air defence systems responded to missile and drone threats outside the nation's borders early Sunday morning, July 12.

Residents across the UAE heard sounds of interception operations at around 6:37 AM. The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) confirmed that the threats were detected and handled outside UAE airspace, and the situation remains completely stable.

Safety First: Official Guidelines for Residents

The UAE government prioritizes the safety of all citizens and expatriates. NCEMA explained that alerts are sent out as a proactive measure to keep everyone safe, even when the chance of any impact is very low.

To ensure public safety, the Ministry of Defence has shared these important guidelines:

  • Do not approach, touch, or take photos of any fallen debris or fragments.
  • Allow the official authorities to safely assess and handle the situation.
  • If you spot any debris, report it immediately by calling 999.
  • Follow updates only from official government channels and avoid sharing unverified news.

Regional Developments

This alert is the first genuine nationwide emergency warning issued in the UAE since May 4. While many residents received a mobile alert on June 26, officials previously clarified that it was due to a technical test and not a security issue.

Other neighbouring Gulf countries, including Qatar and Bahrain, also activated their air defence systems on Sunday morning as a safety precaution.

These events follow recent tensions in the region. Iran announced it closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz after firing a warning shot at a commercial vessel, warning that any retaliation would face a "severe response".

The US Central Command identified the vessel as the M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container ship, which suffered damage during the incident. UAE authorities continue to monitor regional developments closely to ensure the ongoing safety of the community.
