UAE sky-watchers got a clear view of the crescent marking the start of Shaban 1447 AH on Monday, January 19, signaling the end of Rajab and putting everyone one step closer to Ramadan 2026.

Crescent captured in Abu Dhabi

The Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory, part of the International Astronomy Center, photographed the crescent at 11am UAE time when the moon was 6.7 degrees from the sun.

The team behind the sighting included Osama Ghannam, Anas Muhammad, Khalafan Al-Naimi, and Muhammad Awda.

This follows Sunday’s (January 18) observation of the Rajab crescent from the same observatory, confirming the official end of the month.

UAE confirms Shaban begins Tuesday

The UAE Fatwa Council reviewed scientific data and coordinated with astronomy experts to declare Monday the end of Rajab 1447 AH. The Islamic month of Shaban officially starts Tuesday, January 20.

Countdown to Ramadan 2026

Islamic months run 29 or 30 days depending on the crescent moon sighting. On the 29th of Shaban, moon-sighting committees will meet to determine when Ramadan officially begins.

This year, astronomical calculations suggest Thursday, February 19 as the likely first day of Ramadan, though the exact date will depend on the moon sighting.

Eid Al Fitr and the long weekend

Ramadan’s end will kick off Eid Al Fitr, marking the UAE’s first long weekend of 2026 and a time for celebrations and family gatherings.
