Sheikh Hamdan Pays Tribute to UAE’s Royal Photographer

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has paid tribute to legendary royal photographer Ramesh Shukla, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 87.

In a heartfelt social media post, Sheikh Hamdan said Shukla “captured the early journey of the UAE and preserved defining moments in our nation’s history and visual memory.”

Shukla died due to cardiac arrest.

Six Decades Behind the Lens

Shukla wasn’t just any photographer. The Indian expat spent more than 60 years documenting the UAE’s transformation — from its early days to the global powerhouse it is now.

He was especially known for his work with the royal family, photographing key milestones and historic moments that shaped the country’s identity.

According to Sheikh Hamdan, Shukla served the UAE and its people with “deep loyalty and love,” leaving behind a visual archive that generations will continue to look back on.

A Legacy That Lives On

For many in the UAE, Shukla’s images are more than photographs — they’re pieces of history. His work helped define how the nation remembers its beginnings.

As tributes pour in, one thing is clear: the man behind the camera played a big role in telling the UAE’s story.
