UAE Embassy Reopens in Beirut After 2021 Closure

After over a three-year closure, the UAE Embassy in Beirut is officially back in operation, the Emirati Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced on Friday.

This milestone comes as diplomatic relations between the UAE and Lebanon see a significant improvement.

According to His Excellency Omar Obaid Al Shamsi, Undersecretary of MoFA, the reopening is a step forward in strengthening bilateral cooperation. "It reflects the UAE's commitment to Lebanon's stability and development," he stated.

A New Chapter After Political Stalemates

The embassy's return aligns with the recent election of Lebanon’s new president, Joseph Aoun, earlier this month. The presidency had been vacant for two years, with Lebanon’s factions unable to reach a consensus on a candidate. Aoun’s election has been widely viewed as a turning point for the country’s political stability.

A Long Road Back

The embassy was initially shut down in October 2021 after former Lebanese Minister of Information George Kardahi’s controversial remarks accusing the UAE and Saudi Arabia of fueling the Yemen war. These comments escalated tensions, prompting the closure of several Gulf embassies in Lebanon.

Earlier this month, a high-level Emirati delegation visited Beirut to oversee the preparations for reopening the mission. The move signifies a renewed effort to foster stronger ties between the two nations.

Air Travel Resumes

Adding to the positive developments, Emirates announced on Friday that flights between the UAE and Beirut will resume in February, facilitating easier travel and boosting connectivity between the countries.

A Message of Hope

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan extended congratulations to President Aoun, expressing optimism for the future. "We look forward to working together for the mutual benefit and prosperity of both nations and their people," he said.

With the embassy reopening, both nations are hopeful for a brighter chapter in their diplomatic and economic partnership.
